Mélanie Matranga (b. 1985 in Marseille, France). Her immersive installations and tactile sculptures can be interpreted as “emotional structures” that invite viewers into an experience of full engagement. Her sculptural works draw inspiration from architecture, design, and kink culture, and often incorporate the music the artist typically listens to in her studio. Her installations generate suspended atmospheres, inviting the viewer to pause, to enter into a physical relationship with the work, and even to inhabit the space in an informal way. Through quotations taken from Instagram, smoking lounges, and T-shirts tied using shibari techniques associated with BDSM, Matranga frequently evokes various aspects of contemporary youth culture and its related visual codes. Her videos, constructed as loosely scripted narratives and performed by artist friends from the Parisian scene, appear to offer the viewer a glimpse into an environment that is generally closed and its implicit social codes, while never compromising its enigmatic aura.
